Circle of Willis

1. Anatomy:
– The circle of Willis is an anastomotic arterial ring located at the base of the brain.
– It connects the four main arteries that supply the brain:

  • Two vertebral arteries
  • Two internal carotid arteries

This circular arrangement provides a failsafe system against ischemia (reduced blood flow) in case of single vessel occlusion.

2. Function and Significance:
– The circle of Willis allows proper blood flow from the arteries to both the frontal and occipital hemispheres of the brain.
– It ensures collateral circulation, protecting against interruptions due to blocked or narrowed arteries.
– Named after English physician Thomas Willis, it acts as a vital safety net for brain perfusion.
